Project Overview:

Pacific Gas & Electric (PGE), one of the nation’s leading utility providers, sought to leverage next-generation cloud & container platform frameworks. Their mission was to not only enhance automation but also to imbue their systems with robust auditing, compliance practices, and top-tier site reliability engineering (SRE) standards.

TekYantra's Intervention:

With TekYantra’s expertise at the helm, the project’s primary focus was on three pivotal work streams:

  • DevSecOps – Focusing on areas like Container Operations, CI Pipelines for AMIs/Golden Images, and CICD Governance.
  • Cloud and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) – Delving deep into elements such as container platform infrastructure (utilizing services like EKS, ECS), and cluster security.
  • Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) – Prioritizing auto-patching, logging & monitoring, auditing & governance, and cost optimization.

Technological Support & Implementation:

TekYantra capitalized on AWS’s robust suite of services to streamline PGE’s cloud operations:

  • Utilized AWS Codepipeline and CodeBuild to create Docker base images.
  • Integrated AWS’s native services, such as SNS, LAMBDA, CODEbuild, CodePipeline, and S3, to achieve a seamless flow, from pulling Docker images from Docker Hub to pushing them to PGE’s internal JFrog Docker virtual registry after scanning them using Twistlock.

Added Value & Impact:

Through TekYantra’s involvement:

  • Enhanced Automation & Integration: By deploying unified CI/CD approaches, PGE now has sophisticated frameworks that blend seamlessly with their existing toolchain, enhancing both security and deployment efficiency.
  • Governance & Compliance: With automated reporting and continuous monitoring for best practices, compliance is now intertwined in every facet of PGE’s operations.
  • Cost Optimization & Efficiency: Implementation of self-service reporting, dynamic infrastructure provisioning, and a lease-based approach ensures PGE’s resources are utilized efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • Migration & Landing Zones: The migration process has been simplified, with best practices established for superior Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).

Conclusion:

TekYantra’s collaboration with PGE resulted in a transformative journey from on-premise solutions to a state-of-the-art cloud infrastructure, setting new benchmarks in utility service’s cloud adaptability and reliability. The project underscores TekYantra’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge cloud solutions, ensuring that partners like PGE always remain at the forefront of technological innovation.
